Let's Jump start growing Peas! Growing peas indoors can sometimes be tricky, as their delicate roots do not like to be disturbed. In this blog, we'll explore an easy method for jumpstarting the germination process of pea seeds, without the need for starting them indoors.

Materials Needed

  • Pea seeds
  • A container, such as a jar or bowl
  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic bag or sandwich bag

Pre-soak Seeds

The first step is to pre-soak the seeds. Soaking pea seeds in water can help to soften the seed coat and speed up the germination process. Simply place the seeds in a container of water and let them soak overnight or up to 24 hours.

Use a damp paper towel & Plastic bag

Moisten a paper towel with water until it's damp but not dripping, then place the pea seeds on the towel and fold it over to cover them. Put the paper towel with the seeds in a plastic bag and do not seal it. Make sure there is enough air inside the bag to allow for respiration of the seeds.

Germination

Store the bag in a warm, dark place: Leave the bag in a warm, dark place for a few days until the seeds start to sprout. The ideal temperature for germinating peas is between 60-77°F. Check the paper towel regularly and ensure it remains damp, but not waterlogged.

Plant Outdoors

Within a day to several days, you'll see the peas have sprouted and ready to be planted outdoors. Peas are hearty plants and can withstand cooler temperatures, but not freezes. Be sure the plat the seeds after your last frost date.

By using the pre-soak and damp paper towel method, you can jumpstart the germination process of your pea seeds without disturbing their delicate roots. Give it a try and see how easy it can be to grow your own delicious and nutritious peas!
